Mini Series Monday #14 - Year in Review

12/28/2015

At year's end I always feel 365 days have slipped into the past
with little or nothing tangible to show for their passing,
although I know I was very busy spinning my hamster wheel...

So let's look back and see where the time was spent
most memorably - in my own personal estimation.
Picture
The 5th year of my postcard project
is completed - 1040 images to date.
Picture
Visits with Mama continue to become simpler... selfies do not.
Picture
Tom always multi-tasks to help me: printing, gardening, being cat-dad...
and the list goes on year 'round.
Nothing would get done without him.

Photo
I am grateful for all the garden
design work I was able to do in 2015
and for all the lovely people I met... Appreciative, but also exhausted.
Photo
Another year, another calendar.
(Spelled correctly this time too.)
My definitions of what constitute
GardenScapes continue to evolve.

Photo
Looking ahead to the future,
I hope to continue leaving my mark,
as I am trying to teach the next generation to do in their own way.

In summary, I suppose a few things got done in 2015,
although the New Year's list is already lengthy - and ever-growing -

so for now I will simply sleep on it all,
and begin again on a fresh new day.

Mini Series Monday #11 - 6 Degrees of Separation

During the last 2 weeks I made it to a couple of shows
around town, and am currently looking forward
to a Hockney photo exhibit coming up next month.

All of which got me thinking about the connections
between these artists and my own life / art...
some more obvious than others, but let's take a look.
Picture
1. My photo of Chris Burden's "Ode to Santos Dumont" at LACMA
Picture
3. While across town one of Picasso's women at the Norton Simon was deep in thought...
Picture
5. ...or Hockney's "Card Players" soon to be seen at LA Louver in Venice (California)
Picture
4. ...perhaps about Cezanne's "Card Players" on loan from the Musée d'Orsay...
Picture
2. Just blocks from where we enjoyed Jonathan Richman's show at the El Rey
Picture
6. Which brings us full circle to another of my photos - an ode to the simple life in Burbank.
(If the connection between 2 & 3 is not obvious, you'll need to check out Jonathan Richman's song catalogue...  you'll hear for yourself)

A New Year

Ended the old year by visiting the Craft and Folk Art Museum
yesterday to catch Clare Graham's jaw-dropping exhibit
and was gleefully tickled when the docent mentioned that
"photography is encouraged"...

Well, you don't have to tell me twice!
Here are a choice few of the 200 images I came away with -
Picture
Panoramic overview from entrance.
(Aluminum can wall mosaic, chaise and rug at right.)

Interior of Anagrams Cabinet

Picture
Pull tab / pop top furniture
and hanging decor

Picture

Show runs through Sunday, January 4.
I'm going to try to go again.

Acknowledging the Artists

8/2/2014

I went to the final day of the Mike Kelley retrospective at the Geffen
this week and came away with a reinforced philosophy about
the subjectivity of art, summed up as:
"I may not know much about art, but I know what I like".

A cliched oversimplification to be sure, but based in truth...
As individuals, we bring our unique perspective to everything we see,
and that becomes our reality for framing a decision about whether
something is "art" or not.  Take a look at these side by side images...

Why is one considered fine art and the other not?
Conceptually I understand the distinction, but emotionally I formed
a deeper attachment to Grandma Prisbrey's lifelong work
than to Kelley's made-to-be-exhibited creations.

Bottom line is, we will always have to decide for ourselves.

Check this out sometime:  http://www.bottlevillage.com/
and then you can ponder the validity of each...

    As I See It...

I spend a lot of time on the road and always have a camera with me - hoping to be ready when a serendipitous moment presents itself.

Here you will find some of the day to day things that
may influence my art, news about projects I'm currently working on, as well as occasional musings on art, life and random visual non-sequiturs.
