Mini Series Monday #3 - A Stroll on the Beach

Less than 2 days after driving back from Sacramento,
Tom and I took off to the central coast for a couple of days.
It was just what we needed - actual R & R -
as represented by these pictures of shore life.

Of course, I opened up to fresh inspiration as well, and have already begun working on a new landscape series addressing
environmental issues and California native plant communities.
Hope to have an album to share in the next month or so...

2nd Saturday Reception at Axis Gallery

Well, I did it...  drove up to Sacramento last weekend for the artist's reception of the 9th National Juried Exhibition at the Axis Gallery
and it was worth the trip.  Really good show with lots of diverse artists and media represented.  I was able to chat with juror Jenny Gheith
of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)
and also meet a number of the artists who were in attendance,
including Scott D. Norris, whose work I am particularly drawn to.

My piece "Softly at Sunset" can be seen
just to the left of the door as you enter the gallery.

Axis member and artist Justin Marsh introduces juror Jenny Gheith.

Show runs through Sunday, August 24 if you're in the area,
and the Crocker Art Museum is just a few blocks away,
so you could make a day of it gallery-hopping...

"...and not a drop to drink."
California is in a critical drought period,
and it's the middle of summer -
So it is with some irony that I post these images
of our most precious commodity...

Whether it's from our rivers, lakes, oceans or the tap -
let's appreciate it while we still can.

Acknowledging the Artists

I went to the final day of the Mike Kelley retrospective at the Geffen
this week and came away with a reinforced philosophy about
the subjectivity of art, summed up as:
"I may not know much about art, but I know what I like".

A cliched oversimplification to be sure, but based in truth...
As individuals, we bring our unique perspective to everything we see,
and that becomes our reality for framing a decision about whether
something is "art" or not.  Take a look at these side by side images...

Why is one considered fine art and the other not?
Conceptually I understand the distinction, but emotionally I formed
a deeper attachment to Grandma Prisbrey's lifelong work
than to Kelley's made-to-be-exhibited creations.

Bottom line is, we will always have to decide for ourselves.

Check this out sometime:  http://www.bottlevillage.com/
and then you can ponder the validity of each...

    As I See It...

I spend a lot of time on the road and always have a camera with me - hoping to be ready when a serendipitous moment presents itself.

Here you will find some of the day to day things that
may influence my art, news about projects I'm currently working on, as well as occasional musings on art, life and random visual non-sequiturs.
