I'm pleased to announce that I will be showing as
a featured artist during October at the Towns Burr Gallery in Burbank. The Magnolia Park Second Saturdays Artwalk will be the start of the exhibit, and I will be there all that evening. Please stop by and say hello if you're going to the event...

It's (almost) that time again... the Burbank Arts for All foundation is calling for donations to their second annual "Secret Art Show". Here is what I donated last year: It was set of 4" x 6" postcards of scenes around town
that could be viewed individually, or in combination as shown above. Happy to say all 4 pieces were sold! Now I just need to come up with something different for this year... Well, I did it... drove up to Sacramento last weekend for the artist's reception of the 9th National Juried Exhibition at the Axis Gallery and it was worth the trip. Really good show with lots of diverse artists and media represented. I was able to chat with juror Jenny Gheith of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and also meet a number of the artists who were in attendance, including Scott D. Norris, whose work I am particularly drawn to. My piece "Softly at Sunset" can be seen just to the left of the door as you enter the gallery. Axis member and artist Justin Marsh introduces juror Jenny Gheith.
Show runs through Sunday, August 24 if you're in the area, and the Crocker Art Museum is just a few blocks away, so you could make a day of it gallery-hopping... I went to the final day of the Mike Kelley retrospective at the Geffen this week and came away with a reinforced philosophy about the subjectivity of art, summed up as: "I may not know much about art, but I know what I like". A cliched oversimplification to be sure, but based in truth... As individuals, we bring our unique perspective to everything we see, and that becomes our reality for framing a decision about whether something is "art" or not. Take a look at these side by side images... Why is one considered fine art and the other not?
Conceptually I understand the distinction, but emotionally I formed a deeper attachment to Grandma Prisbrey's lifelong work than to Kelley's made-to-be-exhibited creations. Bottom line is, we will always have to decide for ourselves. Check this out sometime: http://www.bottlevillage.com/ and then you can ponder the validity of each... My photo "Softly at Sunset" has been accepted into the 9th National Exhibition at the Axis Gallery in Sacramento. Of over 350 artists submitting work, 58 pieces were chosen by juror Jenny Gheith, the assistant curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
The show runs from August 2 - 24 and I'm hoping to make the drive up for the second Saturday reception on August 9. I'll be sure to reserve a catalog, especially if I can't be there in person... |
